History
The Department of Physiology was founded in 1981 as one of the four pre-clinical departments of the then
newly established Medical Faculty. It has been headed by Professor W.H. Hamann (1981-1988), Prof. K.I. Baumann
(acting head, 1988-1990), Prof. P.Y.D. Wong (1990-1997) and Prof. M.S.C. Tam (1997-present). The department
initially taught physiology to medical students only but now teaches students of Medicine, Chinese Medicine,
Pharmacy, Nursing and Human Biology. Research has been a major activity of the department since its inception.
Over the years, the research programmes have become more and more diversified, covering modern aspects of
different physiological topics.
